Do local police seriously investigate credit card fraud?

Guru asked:

Do local police seriously investigate credit card fraud?
For amounts say around $700 do local police departments investigate credit card fraud or do they not usually bother? At what amount do they care?

How about bank companies and credit card companies, do they investigate it for amounts around $700.

My card was stolen last week and although they said I will be reimbursed, I was just wondering if they will investigate such a small amount. The card was stolen to make purchases online, so there is no real identity of hte person, will they be able to track them down?

How long does it take to investigate?

Randy

Local police departments really don’t like to pursue small cases of credit card fraud…nor do they have the time to do so. Significant cases of credit card fraud are pursued by the FBI.

if you know who got the card they would. otherwise i think the card co. would investigate. track down the pc that was used. also call the places the purchases were made at and see if there are shipping addresses.

Your local police are very unlikely to investigate credit card fraud, not matter what the amount.

Your credit card company will reverse the charges on your account and backcharge the merchant. It is then the merchant’s problem to pursue the thief.

The fraudulent charges will be reversed in a relatively timely fashion. Some credit issuers reverse very quickly, while others take a little longer. Most all cards have an anti-fraud guarantee.

Chances are that it was not the first time this person committed fraud, and there is a good chance there will be an investigation. Since it almost certainly crossed state lines (internet purchase), it will be a federal matter. Depending on the local department, they may also run their own investigation. They will not tell you the outcome of the investigation.

If company or the person whose credit card has stolen registered a complaint in local police station. they will investigate the theft and band the credit card for use
