When the exact same situation happened to me my local telephone company sent me a “Declaration of Fraudulent Use” packet. I had to fill it out and send it back, they told me it could take up to 90 days to be removed from my credit report, but it was removed. I have never had any issues since and that was about 6 years ago.

I would add that it’s extremely important to file a police report…You’ll find that the police don’t want to do it as they will see it as a waste of time as they’ll never investigate it and you’ll probably have to go to them to get it completed….Where this helps is in the processing of the fraud claim with the phone company…the phone company uses the police report to weed out those who are just trying to get out of paying a bill…if you don’t bother to file a police report they will look suspiciously on your claim….file the report and include a copy in the fraud claim with the phone company…it should speed up the process.

You need to file the police report and send a COPY to the creditor with a letter explaining the situation. Keep one. You may as well start a file now in case your SSN is further misused.

They’ll probably send you a statement for you to sign in front of a notary public, swearing you didn’t incur those charges. Then it should come off your record.
