Do local police seriously investigate credit card fraud?

Guru asked:

Do local police seriously investigate credit card fraud?
For amounts say around $700 do local police departments investigate credit card fraud or do they not usually bother? At what amount do they care?

How about bank companies and credit card companies, do they investigate it for amounts around $700.

My card was stolen last week and although they said I will be reimbursed, I was just wondering if they will investigate such a small amount. The card was stolen to make purchases online, so there is no real identity of hte person, will they be able to track them down?

How long does it take to investigate?

What are the consequences of credit card fraud?

Josh H asked:

My teacher in my Economics class gave us a handout and we need to research on this. A man at his workplace took down credit card information, and used it to purchase an item online for 180.00. What we have to find out is if it is likely this case would be investigated, and what the consequences or punishments are for this action, as well as how likely he’d be caught. Does anyone know the details? Would an insurance agency typically not go full out on a transaction this low? In my opinion, i would think not because it wasn’t a HUGE amount of money but I may be wrong.

What is Credit card fraud and how do you prevent it?

mshellrosie asked:

What are the types of credit card fraud and what is the best way to prevent it? Just wondering since I just saw on my credit report that my ex husband had used my social security number, on all things, doctor’s bills and never paid…and this was 4 years AFTER the divorce.

In cases of credit card fraud, is there a dollar amount before the bank calls in law enforcement?

hollyrub asked:

A relative may of committed credit card fraud and I was wondering if the bank would ask that the debt be paid, or drop the issue at a certain dollar amount, or have law enforcement intervene. If law enforcement was to get involved, what would they typically do?

I reported my credit card for fraud, and the bank put a derogatory mark on my credit report. Is that correct?

John B asked:

I got a letter from a company their credit card database had been accessed illegally and that the credit card I used may be at risk for fraud. They recommended that I contact my bank to cancel the card I used to purchase one of their products online. I called my bank immediately and had the card canceled and had another one issued. Now a month laster I’m looking at my credit report and there is a derogatory mark on my credit report from my bank saying that the card was lost or stolen under 2 of the 3 credit reporting agency’s. .
Is this correct? Do I get penalized for reporting possible fraud to my credit card?

Can anyone help with possible credit fraud?

DW asked:

I recently started receiving mail at my home address but not addressed to me or the previous owner. Normally I wouldn’t care – but I am receiving credit solicitations. Does this mean that someone is applying for credit using their name but possibly my address?
I have not received anything other than solicitations- no bills, statements, etc.
Do I need to be concerned?
